Beware PayPal recurring payments

I often use Paypal to pay for things online, because my credit card details do not need to be disclosed to the seller. I wasn't aware however that automatic recurring payments can occur by this route. I bought (I thought) a one-off subscription to AVAST anti-virus and paid by PayPal. To my surprise, a further year's 'subscription' was automatically debited from my PayPal account a year later. I disputed the payment with PayPal and they secured a refund within hours.
Looking at my PayPal profile I discovered that there is a number of recurring payment there that I wasn't aware of. Something to think about when you next use PayPal.

Nothing to do with paypal, they've just carried out your instructions. You needed to log into your AVAST account and untick the 'automatically renew my subscription' option (or whatever they call it)
Paypal wouldnt have presumed you automatically wanted to carry on with this, it is AVAST that have done it (but with your consent because you didn't cancel the recurring payments)
Something for you to think about and next time read the small print!0 -
Paypal is no different to any other payment method such as debit or credit cards in this case. If you sign up to recurring payments whether you realise it or not they can just take it from your account.
To avoid it read the small print.0 -
you can cancel recurring payments within paypal, takes a bit of digging, i think its under the 'automatic payments' page, then cancel0
