Canon Pixma MP460 - colour cartridge needed?

Options
Hi all,

I have a Canon Pixma MP460 all-in-one and mainly use the inkjet printer function.

At present it says both my cartridges are low and I need to replace them.

My question is do I need to replace the colour one if I am only going to print in black & white?

I've done some reading online and from what I can gather I probably will as this device won't just print in black & white without having both cartridges and, not only that, but they both have to be above a minimum ink level - is that right? If so, this means that I can't even leave an empty colour one in, which is somewhat annoying.

However, it is still printing at present so maybe if I stop using colour completely now then it will be ok just to replace the black & white cartridge and change the settings to always print in black & white - what do you guys think?

Thanks.
Gareth.

most printers use a tiny amount of colour even printing in 'greyscale'.

They say its to keep the colour cartridge from drying out?

Anyway the colour cartridge will be used up eventually printing in greyscale.

My Canon will not print anything without a minimum amount in both tanks

If the colour cartridge has to be present to print B&W (and it may well) then the only way round it would be to see if you can get a chip resetter. These are usually bought for a few pounds by people who refill their own cartridges. If you are not going to actually use the colour you could just reset the chip each time it claims it is empty.

As mentioned by the previous poster it is possible, although not certain, it may use some colour ink even for B&W. If so and the cartridge is actually empty but reset then you may get a drop in print quality.

To be honest, if you just want B&W it is probably better and far cheaper long term to get a cheap laser printer.
