How to prove what account I sent the money to?

Is there any bank which shows in its statements where (as in, to what sort code and acct #) a client sent money when she made a wire transfer?
AFAIK all statements show date, amount, and name of payee, but none of this proves that money was, in fact, sent to the correct account.

I ask because I once got in a dispute with my freeholder precisely because of this! It took a while, but their genius beancounters finally "found" my payment. I contacted my bank, and I was told that they might be able to put together a letter confirming account number and sort code of my payment, but the person on the phone wasn't sure about cost and timing. Luckily I didn't need it in the end.

Maybe the new digital banks (Monzo, Starling)?

Starling shows date, time, reference, amount, name, a/c number and sort code for transfers.

Do you know of other banks that show it? I have never seen a "traditional" bank showing it. I now use First Direct. Over the years I have used Barclays, Natwest and hSBC - and none has ever shown sort code and acct #.

Nationwide show the sort code and account number, -but only for transfers to other Nationwide accounts. In fact, that's the only thing they do show for Nationwide transfers. It's very annoying because if you transfer money to more than one person with a Nationwide account you can't tell from the statement who you've sent it to, unless you recognise the account numbers.

For payments to non-Nationwide accounts they only show the person's name, no reference or other identifier.

    Loot does.

It's a pre-paid card, however it offers some functions that a bank account does. For example, punters get a personal sort code and account number and can transfer money in from, and out to, a bank account.

    Incoming payments appear like this:

    PT:FPIN : SC:111111 Acc:11111111 Name:JOHN SMITH Ref:Unknown DDR:

    Outgoing payments appear like this:

    PT:FPOUT : SC:222222 Acc:22222222 Name: JOHN SMITH Ref:Unknown DDR:

For outgoing payments the 'Name' is whatever name you give the recipient, rather than the name attached to their bank account

For incoming payments, 'Name' is the name on the sender's bank account.

It's a shame 'traditional' banks don't show this information on their statements.
  • Thanks. I don't like the fact that Loot is not protected by the FSCS, though.

Halifax doesn't, so I doubt Lloyds or BoS do either.

Natwest doesn't. You can get a pdf with details of a particular transaction from the app, but that only shows the name you gave the payee and a long reference that Natwest generated for that transaction, which isn't obviously related to the underlying sort code and account number (it may be generated from it by an algorithm of course) so doesn't prove where you sent the money.
  • So as of now it's only Starling...
  • I take a screenshot of the details before I confirm payment. I also find it useful as a final check that I've entered the correct payment instructions and not mistyped anything.
  • I do the same every time I pay the freeholder (I trust the company very much and hold them in high esteem, as you may have gathered!) but it is still not a proof - in theory I could have cancelled the payment or changed the acct number at the last minute. I see it ad more of a note to myself to be 100% sure I did pay the correct amount to the correct account.
