Paid Cheque in at wrong bank

Hi all,

I've just started in a new job and seemingly was on autopilot! I paid several business cheques meant for an HSBC account in at a Natwest branch using an HSBC pay in slip! The teller at Natwest didn't notice my mistake either and stamped my pay in book.

The two branches are virtually across the road from each other. I realised my mistake the next day but by that point another teller at Natwest assured me that they'd have left the building for clearing. The day I made the mistake I thought I heard someone call after me but when I looked round I didn't see anyone!
Please reassure me everything will be alright! I've been losing sleep over this. I don't have access to their internet banking to see if it's appeared or not.

I left my details at Natwest in branch (in case the cheques returned to them) and via their call centre and have heard nothing back.

They will be fine and should reach the intended account with no problem.

The only thing the teller should have done is charged you a few quid for their services. You can pay bills with an advice slip at any bank, but if they are not the bank which holds the companies account, there is usually a charge.
Your case is slightly different, but once the cheques reach a clearing house, they should be credited to the correct account.
I came into this world with nothing and I've got most of it left.
  • Oh thank goodness! I'd found old threads on here saying something similar but I wasn't 100% sure! Lesson learnt and thanks for reassuring me.
