I would have no hesitation in recommending a steam cleaner. We have a cheap Earlex bought in a DIY, cost about £25 I think, and we are very pleased with its performance.0

Hi,
I have that earlex too bought I think for £45 at woolworths, its not bad but no use at getting out stains on dirty carpets, and you have to wrap a cloth aorund the bottom where the steam comes out, then have to clean it every 3-4 mins as it gets dirty easily. Probably the main advantage of the one I have got is you get the placebo effect of having cleaned the carpet...lol
One thing it was brilliant for was when I was painting the living roon and trying to take off the old wallpaper, which was coming off in pieces and taking the paint off with it as well from underneath. The I used the wallpaper attachment that came with the earlex and was able to strip the whole wall back to the plaster. You have to be carefull if doing this not to take the plaster off as well. took a while but worked a treat for me. Was probably worth the money for just doing this, but I wish it worked as good on carpets. I think cheap steam carpet cleaners are just that ....cheap...or maybe ok for very lightly soiled carpets.
I'm thinking of trying the rug-doctor from the diy stores, I have heard good reports from them. You can also buy them from their website.

I`ve got a Vax too, bought the Rapide Spring from argos last year when it was on special £50 and its great, although the best stuff i`ve found to use with it is Stardrops.0

Thankyou both!
I have thought about a vax but they take up a lot of space and what ever I buy has to fit in a cupboard ... I only have a small flat
thats why I was considering this one
