My son is about to spend a year studying abroad what is the best bank account for him so he isn't stung by bank charges

He should be asking the universities he is studying at, they will surely have other students from abroad.

Does he actually need an account in Europe? Will he have money (in Euros) going into the account while he is abroad? If not then perhaps he could just stick with a UK bank that doesn't charge for card use in Europe (I have a Metro bank account for just this reason).
