Where can I build my dream home?

Where can I find a piece of land (atleast 0.25 acres) to build my dream home?

Here are my constraints:

1. Under 1hr commute to London
2. Safe, family friendly area
3. Near academic state schools (preferably grammar)

Budget £350k max (for the plot)

We've been viewing properties, but DH and I would really really really like to build our own home. If we buy our next home now, we will have to forget about building our home. :( Its now or never for us !

What direction into central London- leading into Euston, Paddington, Liverpool St., Victoria, Waterloo, whatever?

We'll need a better idea of areas. London's best thought of as not one city, but a built-up county.

London bridge / Cannon Street at the moment. But that could easily change (freelance IT consultant)

You are looking for a building plot in one of the most high demand areas possible. I gave up looking when further out that you want to be, in Oxfordshire. It was not until I moved to the Highlands that I was able to realise my dream of building my own house.

You would probably be better looking for a wreck of a house on a decent plot to knock down and rebuild.

Oxfordshire are supposed to be opening quite a lot of self-build plots.

You are thinking of Graven Hill. A project that started out with good aims, but when you drill down into the detail, the plots are expensive with a LOT of ties and restrictions. I would not have got the house I want, built the way I want there. It was also the wrong end of the county, and I had already moved before that scheme got going.

Given your list of constraints compared to your budget, I suspect your dream house will be located exactly there - in your dreams.

Sorry if this isn't what you wanted to read.

Oops sorry - should have clarified. £350k is just for the plot.

Not sure whether that changes my previous comments though...

    Exactly.

1/4 of an acre build plot in a good area, with good schools, within an hour of London...

OP of your 5 demands pick 2, maybe 3, the other 2/3 are pipe dreams.

    1) £350k or under
    2) Within an hour of London
    3) 1/4 of an acre at least
    4) Good schools nearby
    5) Good area
