Landlady wanting to take deposit back

Options
I used to live in a house that I was renting in a local village for 4 years. The property had mild / bad signs of mould of which I had to sort out. The landlady knew all about this yet did not do anything to sort it. The ground floor toilet did not have a sink either so I had to install one. The bath on the 2nd floor had not been put in properly and so the seals were not well done which resulted in a leak which ruined the entire ceiling of the utility room, of which again she knew and did not fix it. As well as that, the bedrooms did not have any form of heating therefore we had to install our own heaters. Finally, there were large trees at the end of the garden that she was told to cut down yet we had to do that ourselves. 6 months down the line she has told us that she wants the £500 deposit for the 'state' we left the house in, (mould / cobwebs), she had also told us that she had to spend a further £1000 to try and sort the 'mess' we left. She was supposed to tell us 21 days after we had moved out if there was any problems. I was wondering if anyone could tell me where I legally stand for going against her case and claiming the deposit for ourselves?

I think you are going to find that there will be a difficulty with you explaining why if the house was so awful you stayed in it so long and didn't move after 6 months.
  • I don't think any of the work you did would have any impact on whether you get the deposit back or not.
Firstly was it in a deposit scheme - if so you should follow procedures to resolve through them.
If not I'd be wanting evidence of what property was like initially and what it was like when you left and what issues there are that don't come under wear and tear.

    6 months after you've left?

I'd just ignore, how on earth can she prove that the state of the house now is how you left it 6 months ago? If she has photographs taken on the day why did she give the deposit back in the first place?
