If you are in a rural area, how about the local farms may want a part time / hol cover admin / office staff for the summer, or if you are near the coast local large hotels etc

Try the agencies again, temp office work / warehouse work/ local supermarkets etc keep pushing

I would also ring the LEA and check again about home tutor etc keep pushing.

Adult college tutoring (English, maths and EASL) pays quite well .The one where I worked paid 2.5 hours for a 2 hour session, as you were expected to do preparation of at least half an hour or be available to pupils...on the premises.

The downside is that sessions are only in units of 2.5hours and can be cancelled if there is not enough demand for the time slot or the college changes policy ( I lost my Saturday slot when the college discontinued Saturday sessions)
  • Already been made redundant from college tutoring - that was one of the first things that went.
Believe me, I've applied for everything and even went on a small business course to try to set up my own company offering tuition. No demand.

If you are computer literate, this company are looking for teachers, and you can work from home. Won't help you over the summer, but might give you some extra income in September.

It is a bit like supply teaching, you are self employed and work as a contractor for them, and although you do get regular lessons during the term you might only get a few a week, and they can be cancelled at short notice.

Come September (If you're still looking for supply) get yourself round the schools, with a CV and contact details. Some supply teachers I know are contacted directly and not through agencies, because they've done this.

  • Where I am, there are no agencies allowed by the LEA and all supply is managed by a centralised online booking system.
I have visited all the schools in my area - all 35 primaries and 5 secondaries - and got work in 1 school as a result.
They already have their regulars, so it's hard to get a foothold, plus most of the secondaries have their own full time cover staff, so no supply teachers are ever needed.
I will try the tutoring company (see above), but hope to get a non-teaching post before too long.

In the meantime, short of robbing a bank or winning the Lotto, any sensible suggestions for what I can live on in the short term?

Ah sorry, I had assumed your system was the same as the mainland.

In all honesty I would be applying for JSA - and Tax Credits were I in your situation.
