Low annual mileage diesel

We are always told that low mileage is not a great idea for diesels mainly due to DPF issues but just how big a problem is it? Is it a certainty it will happen or is it just more likely to with low miles?

My wife has a 1.6hdi C4 Euro 4 and does around 6-8,000 miles a year - which is has been doing for the last 2 years, originally it was my car and was covering 20,000 miles a year. I saying this firmly holding onto my wooden desk but we have had no problems with it at all. It gets a longish motorway run every 6-8 weeks which may help.

By a complete fluke her place of work is moving offices and will only be 2 miles of unrestricted road away from us soon which I reckon will take the annual mileage down to around 3000-5000 per year but my concern is that in such a short distance the engine is not even going to get up to operating temp most days. It literally is a 2 minute drive with very little traffic.

Is it a really bad idea to keep this car or should I be swapping it for a petrol? It seems daft to swap a known well running car with no issues....

I would get rid. The DPF will clog up causing no end of trouble. You will also make no saving at all on fuel. Diesel round here is more expensive than petrol. Over that short a distance there will be no benefit at all.

How old is the car? Is this the infamously fragile PSA 1.6 diesel?

If the car isn't worth much I'd be tempted to keep it while being prepared to write it off if/when it suffers an expensive failure.

Its a 2010 with the aforementioned engine - although I know all about the issues there and it gets a full service every 8k miles/year which ever is sooner. My dad actually had the same engine in a Peugeot - he stuck to the offical service intervals with his - he doesn't own that car anymore :D

Value is probably about 3k trade it. Not a huge amount but not insignificant.

Don't forget, a single long trip here or there might be enough to keep away the DPF gremlins....?

Given its a 7 year Citroen with a semi auto gearbox on nearly 70k miles that has not had a single part fail I am feeling like I might be pushing my luck as it is :rotfl:

Best start looking on Autotrader I think - at least on her mileage I won't have to worry about mpg for once.

    Has to be said......

    WALK!!!

2 miles is less than 30 mins walk away, if I worked less than 5 miles from home there is no way I would ever consider anything other than cycling or walking. If nothing else think of the health benefits............

It's a 60mph rural road with no paths/streetlights & wagons so walking is not a great idea, less so when the dark nights pull in. If it were me I would probably go on the push bike when the weather were fine but I wouldn't fancy that road on a bike in winter.

    We had a 57 reg C4 GP 1.6 diesel for 5 years.

Used in the week for my wife's 1 mile commute (yes Strider, one mile :p) with the occasional longer run at weekends (book said something like 10 mins at 40 was enough to keep DPF happy) and never had any problems.

Nor with our current 62 reg diesel Grand C-Max. Same driving pattern

Flying against conventional wisdom, but maybe we are just lucky, up to now!

Is there a taxi in your village? It would be cheaper to pay the taxi to take her to work than to run the car when you factor in insurance, tax, MOT, repairs, a service spread over 3000 miles...
