We have an approx 6 year old Solar powered floodlight (similar to http://www.lightingever.co.uk/60-leds-pir-sensor-solar-floodlight-dusk-to-dawn.html?gclid=EAIaIQobChMI1r2q_Jiz1QIV1C-BCh2abgAgEAYYASABEgL0cPD_BwE) - that has failed - the problem being the sensor is not waterproof (the rest of the device is rated as IP65 - The sensor as IP44) - We risked using it on the front of the garage and it has survived OK for 6 years !!
We now need a replacement - should we get another similar one (around £30) or spend a bit more and get a better quality model ?
What would you do ?
It needs to be solar - no power available at the garage - 20 yards from the house !!

Try and get a fully waterproof one and hope it costs you less than £5 a year

Or get the same one and wrap the PIR sensor housing with cling film? (Obviously not across the sensor face).

Or if the ingress is at the sensor face, apply clear silicone sealant around the edges where the face meets the body?

The joint between the face and body is welded (not screwed) - but obviously still leaks !!
  • It may be welded but that doesn't mean you can't run sealant over the join !!!

I have some solar lights from the £1 shop that have lasted over 6 years because i sealed them before use.

Dripped epoxy around the edge of the panel and then used a piece of clear waterproof tape over the top as a belt and braces.

This smear of clear silicone around the top of the plastic and make sure the drain hole is free also.

Its gone through a couple of cheap rechargeable batteries but the panel and bulbs are fine.

I did try hot melt glue on one but that cracked over the winter.
