^^^ yes, why where there not more posts by the OP asking for advice on here......probable result: IT shop 'fixes' the 'problem' for a small fortune.......let's hope not.

Ihope my post did not imply paying somebody to diagnose when there are loads of experts on here for free.....

Is Windows 10 pro an option?
If yes, just go to MS website and download one. Install that with Windows 7 COA

local pc shop very helpful. Problem was the operating system- win7- which had become corrupt to the point it would not open and could not recover either. they can restore using their version as we have cert of authenticity with product code stuck on side. They will also ensure all data is restored and office 365 and outlook email. All legally licenced. OH has been working away most of last 10 days and needs it fixed plus he is not at all technical and happier with this than us trying to fix it ourselves, given OS is currently bust. Shop not charging small fortune BTW, just two guys trying to make an honest living.

Useful to know - what part of the country is that? When you pick up pc get them to show the installed license key (matches license key on sticker); and get them to show you Outlook email (assuming you know what you're looking at).
If you put your general location in your Profile, somebody here may be able to come and help you.

Sounds like you have the potential for a good result despite my misgivings!

You should really ensure that the two guys backup your data BEFORE doing any restoration work and test the disk drive (non destructively) before wasting time and effort ....and maybe cost to you. If windows has become corrupt there must be a reason why and one could be a failing disk! Also make sure that any other programs/apps are firstly identified and reinstalled if required plus a virus checker/firewall/anti spyware program is installed correctly.
If you are not technical and do not feel confident doing the work under instruction then you need these guys to do a full and proper job.
If they do not then do so, come back on here and get advice as to how to do a small amount of easy work to ensure that recovery of system, programs and data is easy in the future by getting organised for it IN ADVANCE of any problem.

Picked it up and all working. Checked out Windows and matches the key. They copied OHs data onto their back up system and checked it first and checked the HD which they said is fine. They keep the data available for two weeks in case we have a problem. Office 365 and Virus checker and all his Outlook emails also copied over OK. Demonstrated it all running in their shop before he took it home.
