Change in Boots refund policy

Hi,
Prior to 19th July 2017, Boots refund policy on the back of their receipt stated:
"Please keep this receipt and we'll happily give you an exchange, giftcard or refund if you change your mind." There was no mention of any time limit on this.
From 19th July, they have changed their refund policy and have a sign up in the store stating that refunds will only be given within 35 days.

I bought an item before the 19th of July so would assume that I am covered by the previous refund policy? A member of staff in store stated that I cannot return the item as I am trying to return it once the policy changed. Surely this is not right? How would I know that the policy would change and that I would have this time limit on returning the item. I would think that you are covered by the policy at the time of buying?

Any advice is much appreciated.
Thanks.

I imagine you received the receipt after you had paid, and therefore after the transaction was concluded.

In which case, any terms written on the receipt are not part of your contract.

Can you please show us that things changed on 19 July?
A link or a photo would be good.
I can find nothing about this.

When buying in a shop any refund policy is at the discretion of the shop. You are not legally entitled to a refund.

Perhaps being nice and appealing to their better nature would get a refund as a goodwill gesture.

    That isn't quite right.

There is no statutory right to a refund when buying in a shop, but any refund policy that is in place forms part of the sale contract.

Thus, if there is a refund policy in place, the buyer does not need to rely on the seller's discretion, they are legally entitled to whatever that refund policy offers.

As above, a shops T&C's are legally binding at time of sale unless it affects your consumer rights. What's on the receipt is legally binding.

However that wouldn't mean you could take back things 10 years later (just an example) as any reasonable person would realise there was limits.

I did say a refund policy is at the sellers discretion- not that a refund was at the sellers discretion.

Technically you could ... if the policy allowed for it. But the seller could probably use the Limitations Act as a get-out and the consumer would need to try and pursue a claim to enforce the policy terms.
