We have a filing cabinet with suspension folders left over from OH's business days. He's all about paper files, I'm all about electronic ones, which works until your one and only computer dies/there is a power cut.

Stuff is categorised in OH's idiosyncratic filing system, which actually makes a whole lot of sense, once I got used to it but certainly house stuff, utilities, bank stuff (why do you need paper statements, Kim, just look at your account online and print/take screenshots as needed?) I guess, kids' stuff, school stuff. I certainly would not keep paper receipts for anything I paid for electronically, don't see the point when it will be there in your bank a/c. HTH.
i dont know why i cant part with the paper bills, i just like to know i have it right there.
i know deep down that its ridiculous that i keep it all so i am getting there in getting rid of the majority of it.
im so old fashioned, thats my problem. lol

I've got a multi pocket folder (think it's called a document wallet or display folder) I keep the most recent of everything....as soon as a new bill comes in, it gets paid and filed and the old one gets put in the fire basket to burn. P60's and tax information gets kept at the back of the folder and doesn't really amount to much.

We don't get bank statements, we've gone paperless so I don't see the need to keep them unless you'll need them for mortgage purposes in the next year or so. You can have a certain amount printed for free in most banks (or print out your own if required)

Birth certificates and passports are in a separate box file, hidden away safely.

Receipts for electrical appliances are kept in another box file with manuals and warranty details and I go through there once or twice a year and sift out anything not required.

So one basic a4 folder holds the current stuff and sits in the drawer, takes up hardest any room.

There's no need to keep it all, honestly.
