    But unfortunately nobody wants to do any these days.

    Mattock.

    Once you've exposed all of the thick roots (get in there with a trowel and remove the earth around them so you can see them) get to work with the mattock.

    It's hard work but you'll get there. Screwfix well decent fibreglass handled mattocks (roughneck).
