Ryanair Payment Fee

I unfortunately booked a flight with Ryanair who never cease to annoy me. I read in their terms that they have no charge for Debit Card payment. Went through the process and there was a 2% charge showing as a default with no option to change payment method etc.
I continued with it having to assume that the fee would not apply once my card was recognised as a Debit Card but it was not.
I contacted customer help and they have told me that if I can prove I have a Debit card and not a Credit Card they will refund the fee.
Is this not extraordinary? I would have thought the card would be recognised a a Debit Card from there number?
I am convinced they do this intentionally and often get away with it!

Some debit cards are recognised, and incur the same interchange fees to the merchant, as credit cards. What card were you using?Evolution, not revolution0

I was using an HSBC Debit card.
Interesting to note that their online booking does not give the option to swerve the charge.0 -
I have the same problem - it wants to charge me an extra £5.20! There is no option to choose a Debit Card, it has one combined 'Credit Card/Debit Card' or Paypal.
In this investigation from 2012 - https://www.gov.uk/cma-cases/airlines-payment-card-surcharges-investigation
It states for Ryanair "From 1 December it will no longer surcharge for payments made by debit cards."
I contacted customer support who tell me that it's Ryanair policy to charge for Debit Cards and then have the customer apply for a refund, sending proof that they only have a debit card. Sneaky or what.0 -
Yet they didn't charge me for using my debit card several times this year.
Which bank's card are you using?
Which browser are you using?0 -
There is an option to select the card type, which I'm guessing you didn't do or selected the wrong type. If you select Mastercard Debit or Visa Debit/Delta Electron or Connect then there are no charges.0

Just wait until January next year - no charges for using a credit card anyway.0

I like the way they are advertising the travel gift cards on the radio. There is a £2 admin fee applied. Who in their right mind would buy that? The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.0
