auto launching of MS Edge - ugh!

Windows 10 on a laptop. I always use Firefox.
But the last few days (since a Windows update I suspect) every time I boot up, Edge launches automatically with a load of rubbish 'news' feeds I have no interest in.
An internet search shows others have had this issue, but none of the suggestions have stopped this happening.
Looked in Start-up, via both Ccleaner and windows settings, and Edge does not appear. Also the start-up folder.
A couple of suggestions have referred to altering the registry, but with vague instructions that assume a familiarity with this that I don't have.

Is Edge set as your default browser in W10?0
-
Same goes for PDF and image files. Microsoft need a kick to wake them up to the fact many of us don't want their software shoved in our faces every time we update the O/S.
You might try setting Firefox as the default in its settings. Right clicking on a PDF in file explorer will allow your choice of viewer (Adobe Acrobat) for a while.
My laptop and desktop (both Win 10, 64 bit) show no sign of that awful Edge in normal use, both run Firefox without M/S "edging" in.
FWIW, I use Spybot Antibeacon to minimise M/S spying and phoning home: https://www.safer-networking.org/spybot-anti-beacon/
I've also changed the look and navigation of Win 10 with Classic Shell: http://classicshell.net/
Both are free and easy to install/use0 -
Not sure why people have default programmes change with the updates. Mine have remained as set prior to it.
I never see Edge, unless I use it, which isn't very often. Must be frustrating for those experiencing no choices.
Sometimes it seems that those who try hardest to remove/change everything have the most problems.

Install Linux Mint to get rid of Edge0

Thanks all.
Yes, Firefox is the default browser. Until the latest indows update I never saw Edge (didn't even know it was there or different to Explorer!).
Already have acrobat set up as default for pdfs too.
What's Linus Mint? Not sure I want to actually get rid of Edge (just in case Firefox dies for some reason), just don't want to see it till I want it!0 -
To change the default app settings, type "default" into the search bar, the top choice should be default app settings where you can change it.
No Windows update has ever changed my default browser away from my choice or made any of them load with some news feeds I didn't want, so I've no idea what you've done to your computer. I don't use things like Cccccleaner though.Proud member of the wokerati, though I don't eat tofu.Home is where my books are.Solar PV 5.2kWp system, SE facing, >1% shading, installed March 2019.Mortgage free July 20230 -
What's Linus Mint?
I would love to ditch Windows in favour of Linux, but the software I run daily isn't written for Linux, it's a similar situation to VHS/Beta/V2000, everyone followed the herd and ended up with a poor system compared to Video 2000.0 -
Have you looked in the start up section of msconfig?0

I do find that if I clean-install Windows 10 and then install apps such as Adobe Reader (I know there may be better alternatives) then Windows 10 will frequently say it's changed the default for PDF files, and I have to change the default again.
This is straight from a clean-install without CCleaner or anything else messing with the Registry.
My theory is that it's best to let Windows 10 'rest' for a while, straight after installing, and let the computer run to process whatever it wants to process, before attempting to install apps or change too much.
However I've never seen Edge starting up automatically, even with all the Microsoft defaults left untouched.0 -
Mint is something you try and think this could replace windows, until teh day when you want to install something and find you have to go back to the 80's and need to type lines and lines of text instead of double clicking something.
I did think about installing it on my mums computer but soon changed my mind. Its OK hands on if you know but not something you want to talk them through over the phone.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0
