Renovating slate flag floor.

I took out some carpets and lino from the floor of my kitchen and beneath many layers were slate flag stones laid on earth. They were all raised and then a damp proof course laid before re-placing the flag stones. I now need to make them look nicer by somehow cleaning them and then sealing them etc. Has anybody done this before? Any advice? Thanks.
