Prepaying funeral on wifes Credit Card

The fact that the local council will pay funeral costs is kept pretty quiet and most people do not dig out this info, but the councils have no options if the family refuse point blank as mine did.

A very basic cremation with no frills can be done for £1,500. For example

We left it to the council to pick the funeral director. It was a well known one who had quoted me that figure of £2700 for a cremation .One car was included. It was not a basic funeral IMO but a standard cremation with the usual add-ons.
I might add that the DWP do not issue funeral payments at all if the immediate family are working but probably if they are unemployed, a funeral payment would be available.
There is no mention of a council funded payment in the form you fill in from the DWP and if I remember correctly they do not "let-on " about the councils obligation neither. It is left to someone to get the information from Google because the authorities will not pass this information on.

It is not a Council grant. The local authority has a legal obligation to conduct, and pay for, the funeral if nobody is prepared to pay. The DWP grant is an entirely separate issue. They have no obligation to point people in the direction of the local authority.
