What would happen with my post as I may have to sofa surf for a while whilst waiting to find a new place.

gets put in the bin by the person living at the address to which it is delivered on the basis they have no obligation to give it to you.0

Whatever you arrange to happen to it - which varies from leaving the new resident to deal with it (likely in the recycling bin), changing your address with everyone to someone stable like a friend or relative for the interim, asking royal mail to forward to same (costs but advisable for many reasons), asking royal mail to do something else... http://www.royalmail.com/personal/receiving-mail0

If I was in that situation I'd set up a redirection to relatives or friends who were settled nearby, then redirect again once you're in your new place.0
