Private number plate Rule change !!
Anyone help me with this please ?
Hi, I have a private reg on a retention certificate that I've held for a number of years, bought at auction through the dvla direct. Unfortunately I've lost the certificate in a recent house move.
I recently requested a copy be sent to me, at the cost of £170 but they replied telling me the rules have now changed a year ago and now if you don't have the certificate then you don't own the plate as you cant renew it without it.
I paid £1500 for my number plate, how can it be fair that they can change the rules on this, not tell me, and now I have lost the rights to the number plate, this cant be allowed can it ?
I have written and just posted my 2nd letter of complaint to the customer services dept.
thanks in advance for any useful replies.

You can send a letter to ask for a replacement if you’re the person with the right to use the number (the ‘grantee’). If you’re the grantee your name will be on the V778 or V750.
It’ll take around 3 to 4 weeks for the new V750 or V778 to arrive.

Looking at this if OP purchased before 2015 and hasn't renewed on an annual basis (possibly because they moved and didn't tell DVLA) then they may well have lost the entitlement. But IIRC this is not impacted by the change which seems to move the renewal from annually to every 10yrs0 -
Tried writing to them, as above. They replied and said no they will not replace without the original. My only hope is these were not the rules when I bought it, so how can they cage the rules without notifying me. Surely that effects my consumer rights or something?
Seems crazy they can move the goalposts without telling everyone. :mad:0 -
