VAT and extras added onto Wedding

Options
I recently got married, paying £5,000 just for the venue. Everything was paid prior to the wedding day except for the bottles of wine and tablecloths, which we verbally agreed would be £10 a bottle and £4.80 for each tablecloth use to be washed. We were happy that this was to be billed afterwards. We asked for 20 bottles of wine to be put on the tables and we used 13 tablecloths in total.
We've been charged £12.50 per bottle of wine and for 22 tablecloths to be washed, and to top it off they've added 20% VAT on the total.
I've rang up to reason and they've agreed we said £10 a bottle but are not willing to budge on the tablecloths, saying their staff could've washed clean ones if the packs were open (which they were initially to find the correct size we needed). I don't think this is good enough.
1) Do I have to pay this VAT despite nothing being mentioned beforehand?
2) Do I have to pay for these extra tablecloths because their staff decided to wash clean ones?

Did you get an agreement in writing as to how many tablecloths would be used?

I more surprised that I would be billed for washing ANY !

As far as I am concern the washing of tablecloths should be included in the overheads of holding the event & something that the hotel should have taken into account when pricing !

True, but they seem to have entered into some bizarre contract where how many tablecloths are to be washed is an issue.

It would make things a lot easier if it was written and we knew what it said.

They're required - by law - to tell you the total price inclusive of any taxes. So no, you don't have to pay the VAT. You agreed x price per bottle, not x price + vat per bottle.

The tablecloths...was it agreed £x per tablecloth used or £x per tablecloth provided/washed? As above though, I'd really have expected that to be included in the base price - at least if they were providing the table cloths/decorations.
You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride
