Taking apart a washing machine

Options
My house came with a decent washing machine for free, I want to get it plumbed in downstairs in the cellar, but the door down to it is quite narrow. So I'm wondering if I could take it apart a bit and put it back together downstairs, I have no idea if this is something that is even possible?

Taking the door to the cellar off it's hinges will give you an extra bit of room trying to squeeze it through.

I wouldn't recommend taking the washing machine apart, though...

How are you going to get it plumbed in the cellar? This is another problem.

  • Older models could be stripped down for repairs but newer models are more designed to be replaced not repaired.
As already mentioned the plumbing in a cellar could be a problem, booster pump for the drain etc.

The casing of a washing machine hold the weight. If you removed enough of the casing for it fit through a narrow door, presumably the top, back and one side, it would be too unstable to move.

The front and sides are normally made all in one piece, so the casing would be the same dimensions no matter how much you took it apart. It'd be a lot lighter though . .
  • As SC says, the casing is usually all one piece, but a quick & easy way to lighten it a lot would be to remove the concrete counterweight.
