Energy customers are welcome to switch to another provider penalty-free within the last 49 days of any fixed contract.

MoneySavingExpert has previously reported that some energy companies including British Gas and nPower gave incorrect information and sent customers communications telling them they'd have to pay exit fees, even within the 49 day penalty-free window. As a result, the energy regulator Ofgem is looking into this and has confirmed it's investigating British Gas.
