High Electricity Usage??

  • Given that people kindly provided me with advice on my initall query I thought I’d provide a quick update which may also be useful for others in a similar situation.

    I've finally managed to get an engineer to call out and install a check meter. Well that’s kind of correct!! When the engineer called to install the check meter the old meter lost its LCD display and tripped the electricity to the house, so in his opinion the meter was indeed broken/faulty. So instead of installing a check meter he went and replaced the meter with a new working meter. This is great news for me as having a new meter should hopefully resolve the high energy readings I’ve witnessed the last 12 + months.

    The only problem is that I’m still left with a £100 p/month electric bill until such time that I’ve enough history of readings on my new meter. After which depending on my readings the company may then consider whether or not to reduce my monthly D/D payments from there on.

    However I've not been given any guarantees or assurance over reclaiming any of the historical overcharging that may have occurred as a result of the old faulty meter.
  • Stumbled across this thread via google and thought I’d make you feel a little better about your situation.
    We live in an average sized 3 bed semi and have admittedly always had a high usage but since moving here it is ridiculous!
    Our current consumption is approx 54 units a day and combined with gas (which is reasonable at approx £60 pm) is costing around £300 pm.
    I’ve just invested in a meter to try and monitor where the drain is! Wish me luck ;-)
  • Well I’d thought I’d provide everyone with an update on my situation as its been a long and drawn out battle to say the least. Through a combination of complaining directly to iSupply, via Resolver and the Ombudsman I’ve finally been able to settle my issue with iSupply.
    In Nov 2017 iSupply agreed that my meter was faulty and my readings were higher than average. To resolve the issue they offered to recalculate my usage based on previous years usages when they assumed the meter was working correctly. However I didn’t agree with their conclusion because of their assumption when the meter became faulty and also their re-calculations didn’t seem to follow common sense as they had a higher electricity consumption over summer months than the winter months.
    Anyway after reaching a stalemate with the company I complained to the Ombudsman who eventually agreed with my argument and decided that iSupply should
    - apply a further credit of £302.16 excluding VAT to your energy account to cover overcharges;
    - complete a reassessment of the direct debit based on actual usage only, and taking account of any current account balance;
    - apply a £50 goodwill gesture to your energy account; and
    - provide a written apology.
    I have now received all payments and an apology from the provider therefore I've considered the matter resolved.

    The lessons I've learnt from this whole experience is as follows
    • Check your electric usage and keep a spreadsheet of them ( I do mine the first of each month now!)
    • Be persistent and keep good records of all communication. This is where I found Resolver handy as I used it as a database which was then provided to the ombudsman when I complained to them.
    • Stick to your guns don’t be fobbed off 

    Thanks for coming back and letting usknow how you got on - most people dont so it's difficult to know whether or how their problems got solved.

    It's a good result but it does show the benefit of keeping your own records and monitoring your meter and bills regularly (at least monthly) because you'll see when something goes wrong and you'll have your own evidence to prove it.

    It becomes very difficult to track back if you dont have your own data

    Completely agree. It is also quite interesting to go back over the many years & trace when you got your new flat screen TVs instead of CRT & the computer screens again instead of the CRT & the new washing machine. Believe it or not even getting a dishwasher saved power usage, so being lazy can pay! Even with the increased costs of electric/unit from gas hot water costs.

    When I stop procrastinating & get my new kitchen the new fridge & freezer should save me 2 thirds of what my current ones are costing!
  • Hi, can anyone advise me. I live alone in an old converted stable. All electric. I have had concerns about high electricity usage for a while. I sat reading, I checked my meter hourly and used 8 units in 4 hours. The only appliance on was the fridge freezer and the lamp next to me with a 13W LED bulb. How is this possible?

    It would have been better to start your own thread, but do the 'blackout' test. See if the meter is still registering usage...

    nathy118 - could you start your own thread please otherwise you will get confusing advice as answers get mixed up with the original thread.

    In the meantime look through the energy threads lots of advice and questions there.
    The answers to your consumption lie with yourself not OVO - OVO doesn't know what you use your energy for.
    Basic questions - what form of electric heating ?  Storage rads, panel heaters, underfloor, big boiler and conventional wet rads. Electric shower - how many, how long. ? Tariff E7 or single rate?  Was last year different to the year before ? If so what changed ?

    PS You do read your meters at least every month don't you ?
