A discussion with your GP would help in that you could discover the truth worst case scenario.

But the answer to your query is to be sure about trips outside your current annual policy you either take out single trip cover or if it's cost effective and the trip is going to be completed within a year buy a new annual policy.

OK. It had never occurred to me to take out a single trip/annual policy in advance if I had a current annual with several months to go.

This was the numb of my original question - annual policy expires in November (for example), trip is planned for December.

I intend to take out a new policy in November, but what if I fall ill in October so that I know I won't be able to travel in December.

Does the policy that expires in November cover me?
The force is strong in this one!

If you fell ill in October with something which would prevent you travelling in December, your current policy should cover the cancellation charges.

The problem comes if you don't need to cancel, but want to go on holiday with coverage for your new problem. When you go renew your insurance in November, the insurer may choose not to offer cover for what is by then an existing problem.

Whereas had you taken out a new policy (or renewed) before October it would be covered.

    Not necessarily

If you have a new condition prior to departure you are required to notify your insurer, whether you are using single trip or annual cover

If the condition is one they do not wish to cover then you have choices:

    1) Continue with the trip in the knowledge you have no cover for anything happening that is related to the new condition

    2) Cancel your trip and claim the cancellation charges

That takes me back to my original question for which you suggested the need to buy an additional single trip policy for the future booked trip. If the diagnosis of the new symptoms hasn't been confirmed/made by the time the renewal is required, the insurer won't cover the condition and may refuse to renew the policy at all. Then you are stuck even if the possible condition is minor.

Agree that it is all a minefield and whereas in your mind you think "I have annual insurance I am covered for an infinite number of holidays" in practice there are issues like this.

One further question, if I may butt into your thread, what happens with a policy provided alongside a premium bank account? There is no renewal date, monthly fee paid and continuous cover provided.

Assuming that you continue to qualify for the cover and the bank continue to provide the insurance then you just need to make sure you follow the policy ts + cs about notifying new medical conditions.

I have always avoided this type because I suspected that you had to be in perfect health when first opening the premium account.
