Coincidences? About washing machine/sewage

In recent months not been using my washing machine much as I often do it at friends as he has a newer better one and he lets me do it if I tidy his flat when hes away, 5 weeks ago I noticed a soaked kitchen floor after using machine for first time in a month (well about 3 days later but those 3 days floor felt damp)
I fixed it by unscrewing the hose pipe from the sink and realigning it and screwing it in tight.
I didn't want to risk using it again and spent a week at relatives and a few days away on holiday too and tried it last week, noticed stains didn't seem to be coming out that well despite using vinegar as well as powder, did a quick wash and rinse last night and when it took too long I changed it to drain and got a massive whiff of sewage/toilet smell (and a minor burning smell but could of just been something else)
At weekend they have been doing something outside my flat I thought was gas mains but saw a mains cover off (could of been manhole) this morning and workman down hole.
I was speaking to someone who mentioned that there has been a lot of sewage problems on the estate recently so could be that.
Trying to work out the truth, was the sewage smell just coincidence?

I agree with the comment by societys child, ask the workman.
I recently had a similar problem to yours. The downstairs toilet wouldn't flush properly if the washing machine was mid cycle. I called out Yorkshire Water to investigate. YW advised in my initial phone call that if there was a blockage that was on my property, I'd have to pay.
The YW guy arrived, he removed the inspection chamber cover in our property..........the water level was very high, almost to overflowing. He shoved his drain cleaner pole thingy down the drain and found the blockage. The water level dropped immediately, as the blockage was cleared.
The YW guy said it was probably a build up of washing powder residue and toilet tissue (yuk). The response by Yorkshire Water was super fast, from the initial phone call to the YW guy arriving was a couple of hours!
I suggest you contact your water/sewerage company and ask them to send someone out to your property.
Good luck
