Defaulted, then compensation given greater than default - what can I do?

Hi all,

I had a Post Office Credit Card (operated by the Bank of Ireland) from March 2008 to December 2013, when (through my own disorganisation, pretty much) I defaulted to the amount of £779.

In December last year, out of the blue, I received two cheques for compensation totalling about £1400 (they took me so long to receive given that I have since moved that I am having to get them reissued to cash them). This is because "we incorrectly charged missed payment fees on your Post Office Money Credit Card". What I am wondering is, given that the amount of compensation is greater than the default, whether they should also be amending my credit history. Obviously I would be very keen for them to do so...

Has anybody else received one of these in similar circumstances? Does anybody have any suggestions about the approach that I should take?

Thanks in advance,
James
