Abbey Credit Card PPI

Hi everyone,
Just had my first attempt at claiming PPI, I had an Abbey credit card back in 2001 (so they say) and I noticed in 2004 that it had PPI on it, I phoned Abbey at the time and questioned what this was, I still remember the day and where I was when I made the call, I was told it was an insurance policy so I said I don't want it and please remove it as I never have PPI, they said we can't you have to have it to have our credit card so I cancelled the card there and then. Now I have put all this down to Santander and they have written back offering me £40 this is for interest etc between March 2001 and September 2001 before the cards were taken over by MBNA and they will not pay compensation for anything after this date as the card had been taken over by MBNA, my question is can they do this, what do I do about the remainder of the life of the card, do I complain to MBNA or escalate to the Ombudsman. My arguement is they added the PPI on without my permission and its not my fault they transferred the card to another company they should be liable for the whole PPI miss selling shouldn't they, has anyone else had dealings with Santander around the whole PPI and MBNA stuff, I don't know which way to turn now to get what I deserve. Any advice would be gratefully received.

Thanks.

You may find the £40 offer is a goodwill gesture because they could very easily time bar your complaint:- it is more than 6 years since the PPI commenced and also more than 3 years since you should have been aware you had cause to complain. The latter date would be triggered by you phoning them in 2004 to question what the PPI was and then cancelling the card because they refused to remove the PPI which you also claim had been added without your permission - this quite clearly should have been the time to complain.

Your argument is invalid. You will find that your PPI appeared on every statement with an outstanding balance, so it took you three years to notice.

MBNA are not liable for the sale, unless they took it. They may give you a goodwill getsure or uphold or reject, you'll have to complain to them
Santander are not liable for the cad after MBNA took it over either so you have nothing to complain about to the Ombudsman there.
