I never really got the I phone hype either until I didn't have one. Androids just aren't the same. Aside from texting, I mainly use it for various banking apps and taking photos. I really don't know what I would do without my banking apps and in my opinion, you can never have too many pictures of your pets.

Although people here have said that they can justify their phones, but I think the OP has a point that many people _don't_ need such an expensive phone.

I certainly don't, and as an ex-systems analyst I take a fairly pragmatic view of my requirements. Ammortised over 2 years I pay £15 a month (or less). That's including dropping my last phone down the loo... My GF, on the other hand, has a high level Samsung (or at least it was..) but she can justify it as she uses it for business and likes taking photos.

Many people don't NEED an expensive car, or an expensive pair of shoes, or a nice watch, but they buy them with their hard earned because it's what they want.

Each person has their own idea of what they think is worth it or not. It's called diversity, and it's wonderful.

The OP does not really have a strong point to make.

People having expensive things they don't really need is as old as money itself. People being in debt and not being in debt is as old as money itself.

I find it bizarre that people still feel the need to compare there own buying habits against others and when it doesn't line up with their view point is then to say the world has gone mad.

If we are worried about people living past their means or credit too easily available then thats a completely different topic that gets into how Government wants to control the purse strings of the country.

    I'll just chime in with..

You can get an iPhone 7 32GB model, 5GB of data, unlimited calls + texts for £9.99 upfront and £32.99 a month. This is on EE. And you can probably get some cashback too if you go through quidco.

iPhones aren't £50+ a month if you shop around

Now for some people, this is their only source of phone + internet. A landline is going to cost you £18ish line rental, then for unlimited calls you'd be looking at about £8 on top. Add internet access and texting AND it's mobile.. I don't think it is unreasonable.

And point of the article was arguing against the ignorance of consumer debt. It is more about marketing and selling which has convinced people that more expensive items are worth the money, when they essentially arent, because they largely do the same thing as the much cheaper options.

Except for that you can get other phone models for significantly cheaper. You missed that out of the argument.

Of course you can shop around but £50 per month is probably a fair average figure.

On the 'unlimited calls' argument, phone companies make their money out of selling packages such as this when people just dont need it.

To be fair, you havent really come up with a point yourself, other than say that my point of view is bizarre that I am drawing comparisons. You dont know anything about my overall spending habits, except for that you could assume that I dont pay £50 per month for a mobile phone.

I have an iPhone. Initially went the iPhone route because I needed a smartphone and a relative gifted an old one. Liked it. When it needed replacing as the iOS wouldn't support newer apps I started looking at other makes. But must of them were massive and I like my iPhone because it's very easy to use. So I got a £300 refurb. Which I've had for 2 years and will keep as long as possible. Sim is a tenner a month.
Not everyone who has an iPhone pays silly money for the latest upgrade.
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

i don't care about your spending habits and the main reason I have left posts in this forum to push back against people who judge others for what they spend their money on.
