I'll offer an alternative possibility - as you say its worse when it's been raining and you nose doesn't help you find the culprit - are you sure you don't have a rainwater leak (say through a vent fan) that's causing the carpet/backing to become damp and what you are smelling is the bacteria thriving in the damp? In this situation the smell can be quite bad.

Lorian, if you take your name from the Lorian Swamp in NE Kenya, I'll bow to your greater knowledge of damp smells!

If it is from Dark Souls, I'll stick with my Durgo valve idea! ;)

Apart from the pipes directly behind the sink, toilet and under the bath, the rest are behind the plaster and therefore I cannot access them to have a look. The plumber already checked all of the pipes in the bathroom and found nothing. If there was a rainwater leak, I'm sure I would have seen it somewhere by now as this has been going on since April.

Does anyone know how much it would cost for me to get a plumber out to find and fix this problem? I've been quoted £54 for a call out but since they have no idea what the problem is, they cannot advise how much it will cost to fix.

I have no idea what Dark Souls is  Doesn't invalidate your valve theory.

<edit> - I goggled It - my Lorian predates that by a long time :-)

Me neither, I knew about the swamp but only Dark Souls 3 came up when I looked for any other use of the name! Seems to be some form of Dungeons and dragons computer game!
  • So is anyone able to give me an estimate for how much this is likely to cost of diagnose and fix? I've tried pursuing DWH but they are having none of it so it loks as though I'll have to pay for it myself.
