I run Calibre, will have to work out if I could run two of them at once.

    You can run multiple databases.

There are various bits of software for the different types of thing.

I've personally tried DVDcollector by invelos.com for DVD's and BD's, it's cheap (3-10 for lifetime usage depending on device and you can sync the different versions).
You can also keep a version of your list online, which is handy if you've got web access and want to check you haven't got something whilst out.

Calibre is great for ebooks but not tried using it to catalogue phyiscal books.

Collectorz.com does separate software for books, CD's, DVD's and games, but iirc is far more expensive than most of the other options.
I've tried the trial versions in the past but not really liked them compared to DVD profiler for the interface (and cost).

Whatever software you use to catalogue your stuff you'll probably want to look into a barcode scanner to save a huge amount of (error prone) typing of UPC's and titles.

Both Open Office and Libreoffice offer a database imaginatively name BASE (I assume it is similar to Access from Microsoft). Will this do what you want?

It would do it, but not to the extent I want, with the front covers etc.
What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare

What about if one of the cells in the data row/column was a hyperlink to a scanned .pdf or .jpg that you kept in a separate folder?
