Payroll/SLC/HMRC threeway...

swindled
I genuinely looked for five minutes to decide which forum to post this in, so if it's in the wrong place, apologies.
I work full time, and like many, have a student loan which needs repaying. I pay £x per month.
Not long ago I received my annual statement from the SLC for payments 2016/17. Instead of saying I had paid £12x, the statement showed only £3x contributions, as did my P60 (which I received shortly after I was in touch with HMRC).
I spoke to my employer, he said they have absolutely paid all my deductions to HMRC. I spoke to HMRC and they confirmed they had only received £3x. They said I should speak with my employer again.
My employer confirmed that he himself had personally been down to dig out the records himself and pointed me in the direction of http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbcthree/item/15d02147-bb3e-45c9-8063-f41e93aab16b that he had recently seen on TV. He suggested I get in touch with the SLC.
The SLC say they can only work on the basis of what information they have from HMRC regarding my deductions and suggested I contact them, taking it full circle. I suspect there is some issue regarding how years are defined, as £3x would be the three months in 2017 before the tax year ends. This still leaves me no closer to discovering what happened to the missing £9x though.
Who do I chase on this one?

Have you got all your payslips? This is all the evidence HMRC need to confirm contributions. I had an issue when my employer changed names. HMRC are the people to sort it with once you have your payslips from your employer. You should pay attention to the needs of the moment - otherwise there is no future. But to ignore the future is foolish - living solely for the moment leaves nothing for when the next moment arrives.0

The fact that your P60 only shows the 3X amount strongly suggests that the fault lies with your employer - the P60 is produced from their payroll records, which must therefore be wrong. I'd definitely check payslips to see if they show that at some point in the year the deductions stopped.0

My payslips show a monthly contribution of £x each and every month. I did query the P60 amount with my employer, but he said that he'd been through the accounts and confirmed they'd made the payments to HMRC each month for all my deductions.0 -

I'm afraid I don't believe him. The P60 figures need to align with what is submitted to HMRC. In the past there could have been a transcription error, but I would think that with RTI the figures are just accumulated each month and used at the end of the year to produce the P60. I'm not sure how you should proceed, but I suspect that you may have to try to convince HMRC to follow it up on your behalf.0 -
Your P60 is produced by your employer from his payroll information so if the P60 does not agree with your payslips the fault lies with your employer's system.0
