Estimated Final Bill

We moved house in May, leaving Npower and joining British Gas at our new house. Npower have lost the final meter readings we gave them over the phone. They now want us to pay a final estimated bill for our gas and electricity of £167. We estimate that if we do owe them any money (and we're not convinced we will) it's more likely to be around £67 not £167. What are our rights?

Hopefully you kept a record of your final readings, just in case it all went wrong so you just need to phone them or preferably write with the correct ones.

You should also have a record of the opening readings for your new house together with monthly meter readings & bills/statements for when British Gas muck it up in the future

  • I had a similar problem which got sorted out by Ofgem eventually, but not until it had dragged on for a year and reached the point of letters from a debt collector.

I didn't think Ofgem ever got involved in individual customer complaints

I don't know. I was pig in the middle between two electricity companies so I rang Ofgem to ask who I should address the complaint to, and next thing I knew the bill was waived and I got a cheque for £30 compensation.

Have you asked them to listen into the call, as it should have been recorded?
