Hi, I'm wondering if anybody can give me some advise? I had a visit yesterday from a salesman from a reputable staircase renovation company who I had contacted to visit me and give me a price. I was impressed by the ideas that where presented (no other companies had offered as much advise and inspiration) and signed a contract and paid a deposit. I am not yet certain that I want to cancel the contract (but believe I could get the work done cheaper if I went back to one of the other companies with the 'new' ideas). I notice in the company literature and on the contract that no mention is made of any statutory right to cancel, has the law changed regarding this?
I have tried to find an answer to this on the forum but have been unable to, there was reference to it on one of the stickies at the top of this thread but when I clicked on the link it was not available.
Thanks in advance for any responses to my question.

Assuming you are a consumer and not a business0

Wow, having read Molerats link it appears to me that consumer rights have got at best more difficult to understand and at worst diminished. The page linked suggests that there is no right to cancel as a staircase refurb involves custom made components. In my case although I have signed a contract after a sales visit we have not had a surveyor round yet to measure up, therefore nothing could possibly have been manufactured yet.0

You could potentially still cancel - just not without being liable for their losses.
Custom made components, would that be made to your specifications/clearly personalised? I'm assuming it would be given the "goods" in question but never hurts to check (if they were made following your order but you just selected from options the trader presented then that wouldn't be to your specification/personalised).
What I will say though is that you indicate the company is more knowledgeable/competent in the services they are providing than the cheaper companies, perhaps their expertise is worth paying a little extra for?You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride0
