Small/compact printer

Options
I need a small/compact but decent printer (copier & scanner a bonus) for Uni Halls. It needs to be smaller than the half tonne refrigerators that some seem to be, and wireless/wifi. Budget isn't as important as the size requirement.

Thanks in advance.

    How small is small?
You're going to be hard pushed to get something the size of a shoebox if that's what you're after as all the gummings and what not - scanner, the main board(s), the ink holders and feeders and so on - plus the need to take A4 paper pretty much limits how "small" it can be.

Something like this perhaps - 39x30x15cm?

Small preferably with copier and scanner??? A bit like the Army asking for small, light weight tanks :)

Not worried about the cost of the inks that may possibly cost more per ml than any other liquid to may purchase in your lifetime ?

When they say print up to 150 pages, they mean text, which total ink equivalent amounts to around 5% solid print area of the page.

Seriously? You dont even give an example of what is or isnt small in your mind.
Give folks something to work off.

Do you want this for a single student or for a group of students?
Doesn't the Uni IT department give recommendations for all-in-one printer/copier/scanners which they support?

Does it need colour? What's the expected print volume?
... and lots of relevant other questions.

As other posters have suggested, your question resembles:
"I need a small car: which one should I get?"....
  • If you can manage with monochrome, there are laser printers that are quite compact. Colour lasers can cost a king's ransom in toner, but for mono the 3rd party toner cartridges are good value. I have a Samsung Xpress M2000 series (old model M2020), they print around 20 pages a minute. The non scanner variety are small enough to carry in a large shopping bag. Argos have a range of them from £35.

The huge advantage of laser over inkjet is the speed of printing, low cost (monochrome models), no smudges and the lack of jets that tend to clog up.

I personally prefer to connect via wires, less hassle - it can be hard work sorting a printer when you really need to print at 1am! However, I think the wireless variety still take a USB connection too.

Stupid question, maybe... if you're plugging it into the hall's wifi network, don't you want to put security fairly high up on the requirements list, so that everyone else on the network doesn't send large jobs to it by mistake or as a prank ? I'd probably be happier with a usb-connected printer that wasn't visible to everyone else.

Does the Uni not offer proper printers you can use ? Should be cheaper per page / higher quality / faster than a personal device.

^^ Great point about wifi .. Im guessing that Uni digs arent massive - so why the need for wireless anyway ?

If budget really isnt important, and you're only criteria is size, then :-

Thank you all. The above looks perfect, just to find a UK seller....

To add, by small I meant smaller than the normal 3-in-1 machines that take up half a desk.

    Thanks Andypix.

It looks pretty naff to me, it's (a) an inkjet, (b) very slow, (c) very expensive (especially ink) and (d) has only a limited paper tray capacity.

It is "OK" for a business person to print off a few sheets, but for serious work it's hopeless.

The contrary view is that it comes in Pink...!
