Conservatory Problems

Any advise for me to check that the foundations are deep enough without upsetting the builders. ie what is 'firm ground'?
You could approach your local authority and offer to pay for Buildings Regulations, and hence get the work inspected. I am guessing they will welcome the money and if they say yes then you have an answer.
Think very carefully about letting the conservatory company work without any inspection. The industry is stuffed full of dubious characters only too eager to take consumers for a ride. Take this as a gentle warning!0
