OK
Let's all write to Abbey on their website, pointing to this thread, and asking them what they are doing to improve things.
I have a business account with Abbey and heaven knows what I would do if this happened to me.
it would be better if one of the major newspapers took these threads on board.
Sunday newspapers have sections dealing with complaints from customers.
They could easily write about this abbey stuff, not sure why they have not done so yet.
Silvermum,
was your theft definetly due to card skimming?0 -
Marco
I haven't had it officially confirmed that the card was skimmed, but in one of my earlier conversations one of their call centre people they said the transactions were showing as 'POS' and not online transactions.
My card hadn't been lost, and I doubt very much whether anyone had obtained my PIN (I very carefully guard this whenever I use it). The fact that the transactions were all abroad (where PIN is not necessarily used) led be to believe it had been skimmed, and then the details used to purchase/ may payments abroad.0 -
Having terrible trouble with Abbey. Unauthorised withdrawal from my husband's account. Six months down the line Abbey have admitted it was their failing and said they would repay all money. A further month on still struggling to get the money. Abbey say the delay is policies/procedures/backlog. Have telephoned/written still with no satisfactory outcome. Have now gone back to Financial Ombudsman and will certainly take the tip of mentioning going to the media.0

how much money was taken and how.
the media would have a field day with this. there is a journalist who has contributed to threads on here from the daily mail. I would write to them straight away. Your local paper me be able to help as well.0 -
Abbey's fraud dept is in Madrid apparently. I spoke to them last week - waste of time that was. I'll look to see if I have the number. Was eventually on the phone for 3 1/2 hrs - got nothing sorted. They just kept redirecting me. The staff I spoke to didn't know much about anything. Luckily I'm only £96 out of pocket due to their delightful fraud dept, who have the ability to do nothing when it matters and everything when it doesn't.0

Last Xmas £800 was taken from my Abbey account. I knew nothing about it until I went into the supermarket to pay for some stuff, pulled out my card and they wanted to take the card from me. I went white, they said there has been fraud and they have been instructed to keep it. I went to the cashpoint thinking there must have been an error, the machine swallowed it. I went into the branch and they told me there had been fraudulent activity. To cut a long story short, the branch manager told me it was their call centre in India. I went through hell though, I had to fight to get my old account reinstated as they said they had to completely close the old account and open me up a new one..pending a credit check!! I was told because there has been fraud on my account a strict procedure now has to be gone through. I was LIVID...it was not my darn fault THEIR staff are crooks! I, like alot of other people, had used the call centres and obviously someone had kept a note of my account details.
I got a letter of apology from them a week later...but with the wrong account details, the letter was meant for someone else! When I went into the branch to query the letter they literally swiped it from me and I never got another letter. I did get all my money back, in about 2 weeks. I know I was one of the lucky ones to get the dosh back so quickly. I now do not use my debit card, do not ring up any call centre, and I stopped using the internet banking as well and now do all my banking through the branch.
It is outregous that these greedy companies are farming out their work to these call centres even though they know that fraud is rife. These insititutions care nothing for their customers.0 -

It is a shame that you feel this way about not using your card or using on-line banking .In these respects I have had no problems .All I have had was what others had ..the issue ( or non issue) about replacement debit cards in this thread .
Did you not instigate a formal complaint procedure with the Abbey and then with the FSA .If not then I think you should have and you probably still can as I believe that you have 6 months to do so. Have a look at the FSA's website for further details or ask in here if you want further info
cheers
