    It's a 'how long is a piece of string' type question imho, but I think if your buyer is likely to be a FTB or landlord I would probably go ahead and replace with a neutral, but not too cheap looking carpet. Reason being what Another Joe said.

    I feel your pain on the dog vomit front, having come down to a couple of pools on the original kitchen parquet this morning :(

    We've previously fitted neutral carpets to sell a house and found we did achieve a relatively quick sale - although in that instance we were replacing a high-end but patterned (Turkish style) carpet. It had cost loads so we took it to our new-to-us house and had it re-fitted there ;)

    Current house had filthy carpets on staircases (one at each end of house) and bedrooms when we purchased nearly three years ago. Some were also 'granny' style florals. Initially we thought we could save the plain bedroom ones, but even hiring a rug doctor couldn't get them thoroughly clean. Temporarily - as the house was a full restoration project - we ripped them up in the bedrooms we were using and painted the floors/laid area rugs.

    When we sell - hopefully soon - we'll be replacing some including the stairs with neutral mid-range carpets, but this is a fairly large detached cottage in an upmarket area where we couldn't get away with cheap flooring.

    Regarding laminate/vinyl plank etc, I think it depends on the type of property. I would always choose engineered wood etc or something like karndean over cheap laminate, but it's been a while since we had a FTB house, lol, and if you're refreshing a starter-type home it obviously wouldn't be appropriate to over spend. When DS/his GF bought their first flat it had laminate throughout, having previously been a rental. They ripped it up and replaced with engineered oak.

    These two combined could save you a decent amount of money if they would work, you should still tell the potential buyers that the carpet is damaged and should be replaced but in them not seeing the damage as soon as they walk in means that they are not put off by it. I would assume most people would probably want to replace carpets or change them to their own taste particularly if they are old. If you replace them I doubt you would get the price you pay for them in an increase in value from a buyer unless the situation is really putting people off the house at the moment.

    The dog tried to bury under the door to the hall so it's ripped for about a 75mm x 1m strip, so I've put some tape of the same colour over it. I might have some spare carpet to create a strip but I'm sure you could see the line if I did. An hot iron shape mark is also visible on another part of the carpet, although it's dried the fabric slightly rather than turned it black. The carpet is so dirty, cleaning muddy patches creates a clean mark. The dog sheds hair all the time.

    This is the same design of house, so everything on the ground floor would need to be 'recarpeted' plus the landing & stairs, but not the kitchen which is vinyl. To be honest both bedrooms could do with carpets as well, but they have different coloured carpet.

    A BTL landlord tells me he has just sold one for 275k just up the road without much work.
