Help setting up Outlook on new laptop - weird error message

Options
Hello everyone

Just bought a new Acer Aspire laptop & bought Office 365 subscription which includes Outlook which I wanted for email.

All going great & loaded up Office by putting in code on subscription card. (Word, Excel etc all work ok)

Tried to set up email. (Currently use Outlook Express on my old laptop which appears to be a 'PoP' account?)

Mistakenly set up my email account in the free 'Windows Mail' which is pre-loaded on laptop. That all works fine & was super easy to set up but when I try to set up email in Outlook I get a weird message in yellow warning me about a 'metered connection' yet am on unlimited broadband & claiming it's doing an update that may take 15 mins or more. Left laptop but thus still comes up 24 hours later & cant set up any Outlook account.

Sorry for long explanation but question is whether anyone had anything similar & knows what's happening & whether I could have glitches system by setting up Windows Mail first? Guess it's software rather than laptop but having paid for 'one pc' use with my Office subscription don't want to take it down & reload in case it thinks this is 'second use' & wont load!

Anyone wonderful computer people with any ideas or help please.......

Thank you 😀

What email provider are you trying to create an account for in Outlook?

You'll likely need to setup the account manually in Outlook with these settings - http://community.virginmedia.com/t5/Help/Ntlworld-Email-settings/td-p/3369475

The 'metered connection' thing is a setting which you can change yourself. The intention is that if you're using something with capped or limited network usage (eg. over a tethered smartphone) you can tell Windows not to use that network for anything too large.

Some people switch it on deliberately to control Windows updates.

I think (not sure?) that setting might also sync across from other computers on the same network with the same Microsoft Account being used as a login.

To switch it on or off follow this:
    https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/3162-set-wireless-network-metered-non-metered-windows-10-a.html

I have also found that Office 365 is incapable of updating itself properly with that setting switched on, so I'd suggest switching off the metered connection setting and then going into Office to update it.

Then you might switch it back to Metered again if you so wish. - you'll still have to tell Outlook to download emails because by default it won't over a metered connection.

Seems like you have set the Wi-Fi connection as metered. To turn it off go to Settings > Network & Internet > Wi-Fi. Click the name of the Wi-Fi connection to which you’re connected. Activate the “Set as metered connection” option. Long article here.

ETA. Ha, beaten by someone who can type faster then me. Anyway, advice still stands.
  • Well in good news I now have my Outlook email working on my new laptop & using the new Office 365 software.

Chap at Microsoft was very helpful & helped me get email up & running. Now using IMAP whereas old laptop used POP3 account.

All well & good EXCEPT every last old email I've ever received is now downloading & has been for last 6 hours & pop up box claims still 11 hours to run! Also looking horribly like it's on a loop as am seeing same years pop up again! Microsoft chap told me would take about ten minutes but now best part of a day & more to go!

Am deleting as fast as I can but Just worried this is going to blow the brains out of my new laptop - any suggestions on how to stop this as not sure how many years it's going back 🙁
