To all london students,
This is an opportunity for us to come together and make ourselves heard on the issue of expensive public transport. Sign the petition (http://www.petitiononline.com/tfl0708/) that will be sent to tfl along with the following letter:
To: Greater London Authority
Subject: Student Travel Discount Campaign
We, the undersigned, support ULU’s student travel discount campaign to extend the 30% discount on public transport to include single and one-day tickets.
Student travel patterns have changed dramatically over recent years and the current scheme no longer fully meets the needs of London students. The cost of buying single and one-day passes at the full rate prevents some students from accessing academic resources and facilities as required by their courses. This means that some students are being disadvantaged as they simply cannot afford the fare.
An extension of the student discount to include single and one-day travelcards will help to offset some of the costs of studying in one of the world’s most expensive cities. By reducing prohibitive travel costs, cheaper travel will also allow students to engage in a wide range of extra curricular activities such as volunteering, sport and enjoying London’s cultural facilities.
Last year we collected in excess of 5,000 signatures, and the signatures below will be added to those supporters. We will also be adding signatures collected by other means to this petition at the end of the campaign.
Sincerely,
0

Oyster cards can be bought in most newsagents. Yes you need to put money on them every so often but despite living in Birmingham I have one to use when I am visiting London. It works out at 90p for a single bus fare as opposed to £2 which is the current rate.
As for the rest of your posting - sorry but it is plainly a load of poppycock - get yourselves Oyster cards which you can use on the bus or tube - you put on money that you can afford - perhaps money that you would normally spend on getting bladdered every night?0 -
Students in London choose to study there, and are (or should be) aware of the costs before they commence their studies. The fact that London students get any discount is more than students in other cities get.
It used to cost me £5.90 a day to travel the ten miles to uni, and I am outside London. Should I get a discount also?Gone ... or have I?0 -
I would agree that Oyster is a good system. MY OH and I have them for when we visit our daughter at Uni there. She has one, and has had for the full time she has been there, 4 years, and into her 5th.0

to be honest it can be a bit of a pain if you only have lectures for 3 days a week as there is no discount, any more than 4 and it becomes with getting a travel card as opposed to individual daily passes
but 30% is a very decent and reasonable amount and there is little reason as to why it should apply to day passes or single trips as it is designed for people who travel to uni etc by train in that case shouldnt that be a regular thing? most people have a regular timetable to stick by so should be able to get travel cards and if they are in for 3 days a week and under your really not paying that much for travel anywayYes Your Dukeiness0 -
I guess students have chosen to study, so cant really complain they cant work full time. My friends who are students find the loan provided to fund being a student, plus part time jobs work just fine.
One works in a clothes shop and has students coming in spending hundreds then asking if they do student discount at the till-not the best way to gain sympathy lol.
However, students aside, I do think transport should be cheaper-especially as it is so unreliable and unpleasant! If it hurts no-one, let it be :beer:0
