Hi
I'm looking into building over my garage - semi detached house with single garage. Have only had one builder round. He said the foundations are probably not strong enough so would need knocking down and building again.
He thinks all in£50k which I thought was excessive!! This is all in - electrics, plumbing etc.
Worth it?

How did you decide it was excessive?
Have a look at the Homebuilding and Renovating website. They have a calculator of sorts for extensions.
£50k is not unreasonable for a double storey extension. Guessing at 6 metres by 3, two floors = 36 metres. At £1500 a metre it comes out at £54,000.Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.

get a few more quotes. You may not need to strenghten the foundations, a lot of builders that are busy dont really want the work so will make the job bigger0

How does getting a quote establish whether or not the foundations need strengthening?
The OP needs a spade to dig alongside the existing footings to find out how deep they are, not another guesstimate. There will be no proper quotes until people stop guessing.
It's got nothing to do with not needing the work, it's a legitimate question that needs answering on every single potential build on top of an existing structure.Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.
