how can i improve credit score/rating

hi need of help of improving my credit rating my credit rating is not brillant as becuase of previous mobile contract debt went messed up so now im currently trying to.improve make better what things could i do to improve my credit i currently have a sim only contract and direct debits for contract and gym going out my account not sure if this will help is there anything anyone could suggest that could help improve credit file/rating,score.
