The laptop keeps shutting down and the fan is noisy so suspect cpu may be overheating but not sure.

I installed win10 and wben I ran a hard drive test it passed the quick test but failed the long test so i replaced the hard drive with a second hand SSD but am still having the same problem. I have also blasted the vents with compressed air to clear any dust from the fans.

When i first boot it hangs on windows logo. when i reboot it boots ok but is noisy and keeps shutting down. Another strange thing is that it will not always take power from the charger (charger is from another hp laptop). the green light on the charger will go out and i have to switch charger off/on to get it back on. I am assuming it is not charging when light goes out??

if cpu/fan is the problem, are they easy/practical to replace?

do i need to change any settings in bios for ssd?

i have a 'question mark' in device manager for a unknown device on pci express complex. anyone any ideas?

Any help/advise appreciated

Blasting the vents really just shoves the dust back inside the laptop ... to then simply get sucked back into the heatsink. (The heatsink is usually mounted near the vents). If possible you should remove the base cover and physically remove the blockage at the heatsink, then blast the vents with the base cover off.

That's my laptop (not an HP) with the base cover off. The heatsink is under the black cover near the fan ... removing the fan allows access to clean the heatsink.

Yep, first step - inspection of vents. Can you see dust. Get the hoover out...e.g. (take care)

I assume you had a sucker when blowing the air around? Next will probably be thermal paste replacement.
PS. have you recorded the CPU temp? Notebook Fancontrol is recommended for HP dv7.

The CPU is running between 50 and 70 degrees normally but when installing the win10 creative edition went into the red before shutting down. The fan is working ok as increases in speed as the cpu gets hotter

is there anything i can do keep the temp down or is that cpu not up to the job of running win10?

I'm not an electrician but I'd say the charger is underpowered (3.34A) compared to dv7 needs (4.6A) and so the HP15 charger will got hot and possibly switch off.
Charging is a separate problem from the hot running CPU though; the CPU is sluggish but 50 to 70 degC sounds ok to me; it shouldn't overheat when installing Creative Edition unless there's a support issue with that CPU in CE. A quick fix is to point a fan heater (cold) under the laptop when installing and next step is to open the laptop up with a view to putting some new CPU paste on and checking fan for blockage.
