Brave of you to publish this quite so prominently, given that it owns MSE. Well done!

Journalistically would have been more honest to mention the ownership link in the story, in my opinion.

I agree, but the link was bound to be revealed here in the comments. Since there are still many who think Martin Lewis still owns and runs MSE, I doubt there will be any harm to the brand.

Glad to see such fines handed out, but sad that it hasn't happened to more unscrupulous firms than Money Supermarket.

Doing the maths, £80000 divided by 7.1 million is 1.126p per email.

So even if Money Supermarket got only a small success rate from that email campaign, then they will have earned a lot more than £80000 from it.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

Nowhere is it required that punitive fines have to exceed the amount of any profit resultant from the misconduct. It's still money lost to the company.

In any case, I don't imagine much profit was gained directly from upsetting people who had opted out of unsolicited communication by sending them "updated terms and conditions" along with an invitation for them to reconsider their privacy settings ...
