OK, so now we are all at the same point of enlightenment. I have an aside

Is it worth me going throug all this with the endless barrage of script reading drones that orange seem to throw at me ??
Can they relent on an individual customer basis if they make enough noise or is this a matter they will have to agree with OpenReach across the board and therefore make my efforts futile.
Should I keep nagging Orange or just go with someone like PlusNet and save all the pain

I have not seen much about the new Orange telecom offering but I would guess that they will state somewhere in their small print that you need a working BT line. Personally I would stick with BT for line rental, giving maximum flexibility for both calls and BB - don't like combined packages!:doh: Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -

The sigh is because this situation is brought up over and over again. It is mentioned on pretty much every page of the phones forum for the last...ooh, however long I have been here. Fact is that its frustrating that people dont use the search function at all, or even bother to read threads that indicate other people have the same issue.

I do understand drunkstar, but to the avarage person, this issue only arrives when they move house, which lets face it, is not everyday.
Frankly I am horrified and do not actually understand the situation at all.
Tommorrow I am moving to a new rented address. The house is victorian town house that has clearly had a phone before. When I phoned to change my BT account over, they said they had to check the line. A chap phoned me (whilst in Sainsburys) and said there was no line at all and it will cost £125 to connect. They are going to phone back tommorrow, as I was to surprised to decide.
I know everyone here will *sigh* but can anyone else (does anyone else) supply landlines and connections?
We are skint and I am pretty gutted as when we move out it will stay for someone else. Or is it the landlord's responsibility at all?:starmod: I am not that savage :heartpuls But I am a Vixen :staradmin0 -
Oh and just in case, I did search and I STILL [EMAIL="DON@T"]DON'T[/EMAIL] GET IT. It is gone on about so much and there are so many conflicting messages and posts that it would be far better if people who did know and understand, made a sticky that explained it. Then when Jo average phone user came along confused, the 'phone boffins' would not have to *sigh* and repeat themselves to the inferior non-phoneaholics.

And that is the exact point - Virgin could employ Openreach to provide the line just like any of the other line providers (including BT) would have to do but, because that would mean they'd have to put money up front (like you will have to), they won't.
However, BT alone is required by its licence to do so (it cannot 'opt out').Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0 -
These other Telco's want you to already have a working landline as it only costs them just over £2 to transfer the BT line to there, where for them to get a line installed would cost them over £100. These other Telco's don't want to swallow that £100 or seem to want to pass it on to the customer, they are doing all they can to make you think BT is the evil company, when it is them who don't want to pay the £100+ fee or give you the chance to pay it.It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc...
