Digital Transcription Kit

Options
My office is stuck in the dark ages and we still use little tapes in a dicta machine that I then put into my transcription system and type out.

My bosses dicta machine has broken and I am trying to get him to move to digital and he is agreeing as to buy a new dictamachine appears to be as much as a whole digital transcription kit (if not more).

But I have no clue which one to get or how they work?

How does the stuff he has recorded on to the new machine get to me so that I can type it? I know I sound clueless, but have used the old system since I started here.

It might be a system that uses a handheld digital device which uses "SD cards" instead of tapes. The only difference is some software and a small box added to your machine to read the card.

Another system uses a microphone connected to your boss's desktop and he speaks into that. The recordings are saved by a dictation program into a folder on your machine (or central server if you have one!)

You then pick the track to be transcribed and it starts to play. You use the foot-peddle as normal to forward/rewind/pause the audio.

    Thanks for that.

So it is fairly easy to use? And easy to install?

I have a pretty old computer which needs updating, but as boss isn't sure where business is going in the future, he's pretty reluctant to update anything!

My boss has it in his head that he is going to get a Phillips as that is what we have, but I do see cheaper ones on the net and have no clue what the difference between any of them are!

It should be easy to install and set up what ever "kit" you get.

As long as your computer as a couple of free USB ports you'll be fine (so any PC made within the last 10 years.)

You can't go wrong with Phillips or Olympus kits, they should have great documentation and setup instructions anyone can follow.

Thanks again. You've been a great help. Olympus is the other name that keeps cropping up. And yes I have a few USB ports. Thanking you.

  • As an FYI - if anyone has a Samsung Galaxy S7 (or S8) then it's got built in voice recording and transcription.
