What is the Tell Us Once reference number?

What is "the Tell Us Once reference number given to you by the registrar" which is needed to use the Tell Us Once website. I came away from the registrar with my copies of the Death Certificate, a receipt for paying for those, and a form BD8 v 2.1 Sept 2012, which is titled "Registration or notification of death", signed by the registrar.
I can find no 12 character alphanumeric anywhere.
What's all this about? How do I get it?

The registrar should have created a record for you on the Tell Us Once system and given you an information sheet with a unique ref number on it which then allows you to access the system and complete the necessary details from home.

If they either forgot, or the system was down, it can be done later. Ring the registration office concerned and ask them - they may be able to give you the reference number over the phone.

Yes, the registrar did say that the "computer was down", but I didn't quite catch what else he said after. I have phoned them (Registrar) and they have given me the number.

Just do advise you may still want to follow up with some of the organisations that Tell Us Once notify—I got the impression the Council Tax refund due to my mother's estate wouldn't have been dealt with for weeks had I not had cause to ring them yesterday. They did have all the details, however, so the service does work, it might just be this particular council. I am doing Probate myself, I should add, so it may not matter at all if you have instructed a solicitor to deal with the estate.
