Gnergy Gas Bill - 882 units in 45 days.

Hi there

Just trying to understand why our gas bill is so high.

We just moved houses and wanted to give notice to the gas company to pay the remaining bill. We gave the gas reading and they said the remaining amount was £397.71

We looked at the bill and it said:

Present Reading: 24,460 (which we gave)
Previous reading estimated: 23,578

Which means we used 882 units or 9,897 kwh.

This period was for 1st Jun 17 - 15th July so 1 month and 15 days. I cant understand how we could have used that much, bearing in mind its summer. It must be wrong and the estimated reading number incorrect.

Can I just go back to them an flat out refuse to pay that amount and get an average instead.

Thanks

Hi - welcome to the forum. The answer lies in the word 'Estimated'. The supplier guessed 23578 and got it wrong. You have not used 882kWhs in the period 1st June to 15th July. The 'estimated' reading was on the low side; that is, it should have been higher. The way to avoid this situation is to provide your supplier with an actual meter reading once a month.

As Hengus said, your conclusions are incorrect. The actual reading at the time they gave as an estimated may have been 24,459, or anything other than what it was, which is why you have a high bill. Gas is mostly used over the winter so regular meter readings to your supplier are more important from September to March. Might be worth checking what the previous actual reading was (prior to June) which might explain why their estimate was way off.

No, it does not mean "we used 882 units or 9,897 kwh.".

It's a catch up bill based on a previous estimated reading. Did you not check the accuracy of that estimate on the last bill?

The good news is, your last bill was low by the same amount that this one is high. So while this figure comes as a shock, try to think of it as you having an interest free loan on the difference.
