Faded Station Car Park season ticket

Good evening. I have just returned to my car tonight at 11pm to find I have been given a ticket for not displaying a valid ticket. The reason being my monthly car park ticket has faded in the sun having been on my dashboard for the last 3 weeks. You can see the date if you look very closely but very difficult through the windscreen. They always take my train season ticket before I buy the car park one each month so assume there are records etc, but wondered if anyone had any experience of a similar issue and if there were any must dos or Donte on appealing this one.
Many thanks
